Famous Five
Brewed for Risk Takers and Troublemakers In Celebration of International Women's Day
At Troubled Monk, we’re proud to introduce our latest creation, Famous Five White IPA—a beverage crafted entirely by our talented female brewers and staff. As a beverage company with a team composition over half female, we’re honoured to be a driving force in Alberta’s craft beer scene, pushing boundaries and fostering opportunity for everyone every step of the way.
The Famous Five White IPA isn’t just a beer — it’s a testament to women's talent, skill, dedication, and creativity in the industry. Every aspect of this exceptional brew reflects our team's passion for their craft, from the recipe formulation to the brewing process to the concept creation and label design. Brewed in Alberta, Canada, with precision and care, Famous Five is a slightly hazy straw coloured white IPA with notes of pepper, cloves and an array of tropical fruit and citrus.
The name ‘Famous Five’ pays homage to the resilience and strength of the five Canadian women who pushed boundaries, made bold moves, and had the determination and courage to fight for equality in Canada. These trailblazing women paved the way for many of us with the rights and opportunities we have today.
Here’s a Little Bit More About The Famous Five: The Women Who Redefined "Persons" (And Kicked Down a Door or Two!)
Nearly 100 years ago, in Alberta, five bold, brilliant, and downright unstoppable women decided they wouldn’t take no for an answer. They were Emily Murphy, Henrietta Muir Edwards, Nellie McClung, Louise McKinney, and Irene Parlby—better known as the Famous Five.
In the 1920s, Canadian law stated that only “qualified persons” could be appointed to the Senate. The catch? The government didn’t consider women to be persons under the law. (Yes, really.)
Emily Murphy, a trailblazing judge, had had enough. Along with her equally determined allies, she asked the government the simple yet powerful question: “Are women persons?”
The Supreme Court of Canada said no in 1928. (Ouch!) But the Famous Five weren’t about to back down. They took their case to the Privy Council in Britain, the highest court at the time. History was made on October 18, 1929: Women were finally declared persons under the law.
This ruling wasn’t just a victory—it was a game-changer. It cracked open doors that had been bolted shut, allowing women to step into political roles, fight for their rights, and shape Canada’s future.
And now, nearly 100 years later, we celebrate International Women’s Day, honouring the Famous Five and their legacy. Their statues stand tall on Parliament Hill and in Calgary’s Olympic Plaza, reminding us that change happens when courageous voices rise, speak their truth, and demand to be heard.
So here’s to the women who challenge the rules, rewrite the books, and kick down the doors (let’s go girls!)—because history isn’t just something we remember. It’s something we make. 💪👩🍻
In celebration of International Women’s Day, we’re thrilled to release Famous Five, but our commitment to supporting women extends far beyond the beer in your glass. That’s why a portion of the proceeds from Famous Five go towards supporting CAWES (Central Alberta Women’s Emergency Shelter). This contribution aids in purchasing essential items like beds and hygiene products, helping to provide comfort and support to women and children in need within the central Alberta community.
